Get connected
We connect you with independent local pool contractors who serve your area and handle the kind of work you described. Your request is free and carries no obligation.
Meet the contractor
Each contractor looks at the pool, answers your questions and prepares a written quote. Ask for their state license number and check it on MyFloridaLicense.com.
Compare and decide
Compare the quotes line by line. If one suits you, you contract directly with that contractor, who quotes, contracts and does the work. If none suits you, you owe nothing.

What typically happens on a resurfacing job

Every pool and contractor is different, but most resurfacing jobs follow the same broad sequence. Here is what the contractor you hire will typically walk you through. Ask about each step when you compare quotes.
Evaluation
The contractor typically inspects the existing finish, tile, coping and deck, looks for cracks or signs of a leak, and measures the surface. If a leak is suspected, leak detection usually comes before any new finish, because a new surface is not a leak repair. Structural shell changes need a residential or commercial pool contractor.
Draining and the discharge plan
Before draining, the contractor plans for groundwater and the hydrostatic relief valve, which trade publications such as AQUA Magazine and WaterShapes describe as the main risk to an empty shell. In Orange County, chlorine is stopped about 10 days ahead, and water goes to the lawn only at total chlorine of 0.01 mg/L or less, pH 6.5 to 8.0 and 25 gallons a minute or less. It never goes to storm drains, streets or septic systems. Contaminated water from a neglected pool is pumped out by a sanitary service, and SJRWMD approval may apply to dewatering.
Prep
Depending on the old surface, the crew either chips out the existing finish or prepares it for a bond coat. Loose tile, coping and fittings are dealt with at this stage, and it is a natural time to ask about replacing an old main drain cover with one that meets the federal Virginia Graeme Baker Act standard.
Application
The finish (white or colored plaster, quartz or pebble aggregate) is applied to the drained shell. Many homeowners schedule this part for the drier months, since NOAA normals for Orlando International Airport put about 57 percent of the year’s rain in June through September.
Refill and start-up
The pool is refilled and the contractor walks the homeowner through start-up and water balancing for the new finish. Orlando Utilities Commission reports average hardness of about 129 ppm, roughly 7 grains per gallon, so ask how start-up accounts for your fill water. If the job is permitted, the inspector may check pool safety features. Ask your contractor.
Permit rules for resurfacing vary by city and county, and no Orange, Seminole or Lake county source we found states the residential rule in writing. Orange County has treated pool resurfacing as a pool renovation, and it requires a permit for new concrete or paver decks (pavers need a zoning permit). The licensed contractor confirms and pulls any permit required.
What to have ready
- Your address, so the right city or county rules apply
- The current finish (plaster, quartz, pebble or fiberglass) and roughly how old it is
- Pool size or gallons, if you know them
- Photos of rough spots, stains, loose tile, cracks or deck damage
- Whether the pool has a screen enclosure, a spa or a lake lot
- Your HOA declaration, if you have one. Check it and get ARC approval where it applies, especially for decks, pavers and coping
- Your preferred timing, keeping the June–September rainy season in mind
